Libertyville's Race for Lake County Board

As I'm sure you've read several times over in the local press, yesterday was the first day for local candidates who wish to participate in the March 2012 local elections, to file their nominating petitions with the Lake County Clerk's office.

One race in particular will be very exciting to watch - the Lake County Board seat for District 15 (which covers the entire Village of Libertyville, plus a few parts of Mundelein = click here for a map of the entire district)

I am very excited to be supporting Dan Donahue's bid for the Lake County Board!

Dan is someone who is well informed with the best practices of local government, he exudes integrity and honestly - plus - he is the common sense kind-of-guy you would want representing you at -any- level of government. The entire county will benefit from Dan's leadership and knowledge.

On his website, Dan spells out some pretty compelling reasons why he should be elected.

Please, visit his website: www.electdonahue.com for more information.

Here is the latest E-News update I received from the village:

Electric Utility Tax Correction
2011 Vehicle Stickers on Sale Now
Groot Yardwaste Collection Begins

Electric Utility Tax Correction

The Village of Libertyville levies a Municipal Electricity Utility Tax on residents/businesses in Libertyville. In 2010, the Village Board extended the collection period for this tax; however, ComEd did not collect the Electric Utility Tax for the months of January and February 2011. Accordingly, to reduce the burden to the residents/businesses of the Village, the Village will recover the lost Municipal Utility Tax for January and February 2011, through billing residents/business’s electric utility bill from April through the month of August. If you have any questions, please contact ComEd at 1-800-334-7661.

2011-2012 Vehicle Stickers on Sale Now

Village Vehicle stickers must be displayed by May 1, 2011. Stickers are available at the Village Hall - $30 per vehicle before May 1, $50 after May 1. Village ordinance requires that every vehicle housed or registered in the Village of Libertyville must display a current Village sticker by May 1, 2011 or face a possible $100 fine.

Groot Yardwaste Collection Begins

Residential landscape waste is collected weekly from April 1st through November 30th on your regular waste collection day. Residents who have a limited volume of yard waste may purchase a sticker and place it on either a 33 gallon can or a biodegradable yard waste bag. Residents who generate higher volumes of yard waste may pay an annual fee for the landscape waste season collection. Up to 6 bags are allowed per week from April 1st November 30th; twelve bags per week are allowed from October 20 until December 1st. Contact Groot at (877) 404-7668 to sign up and www.libertyville.com/garbage for further information.

Last Thursday, patch.com featured a letter to the editor from John Snow - you can read is HERE.

How you can help?

Snowpocalypse 2011 Hits Libertyville!

From what I understand, it's starting to snow in Libertyville. As I write this blog entry, I'm sitting in San Jose, California. I know you all feel sorry for me - braving the chilly 65 degree weather. (Please don't hate me - I really can't wait to get back to Libertyville!)

Yesterday for lunch, I had a chance to try a burger and Oatmeal Stout at the Los Gatos Brewing Company - it was good, but it also really made me homesick for Mickey Finn's. I don''t think I've been anywhere for a burger and beer that even compares to how good the food and beer is at Finn's. I've also been eating a lot of Mexican food out here.... Again, it's all been "good" - but I have yet to find fajitas that are better than Austin's! I guess you can say this trip has made me miss the outstanding world-class dinning we have in right in town.

The Village Braces for Snow

UPDATE - WEATHER ADVISORY ISSUED BY THE VILLAGE - CLICK HERE - UPDATE

From what I'm reading online - schools, Cook Library and just about everywhere else is closing early today and will remain closed tomorrow. I found a couple of good article I thought I'd share:

Amy Alderman at the TribLocal - http://triblocal.com

Chi-an Chang at Patch.com - http://libertyville.patch.com

The Daily Herald has a good list of who to call if you have utility problems during a snowstorm - http://dailyherald.com

The official Village of Libertyville website has a great rundown of many events (such as garbage collection) that are delayed or cancelled - www.libertyville.com

Have fun and enjoy the snow! If you take any cool pictures of the snowstorm that you'd like to share - e-mail me @ jimmoran77 (at) gmail.com - I'd love to post them here later in the week!

Libertyville Teen Busted on Burglary Charges: Faces 15 Years in Prison

The Lake County Sheriff's Office has just announced charges against a 19-year-old Libertyville man - he's suspected in a string of burglaries that were allegedly helping to support his heroin addiction. Parents - this is a great example of why it is important to talk with your kids about drugs - even in Libertyville.

Here is the press release just sent out by Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran:

Waukegan - Sheriff's investigators have charged a 19 year-old Libertyville man following a two month investigation into numerous burglaries that occurred in the incorporated and unincorporated Libertyville areas.

Eric L. Schlemm of 810 Hawthorne Lane in Libertyville was taken into custody yesterday after investigators found Schlemm at the Libertyville train station returning home after a suspected trip to Chicago to purchase Heroin. Investigators became suspicous of Schlemm when burglaries began occurring in the Libertyville area during the month of December and they realized Schlemm was out on bond for similar offenses stemming from last summer.

Prior to picking Schlemm up at the train station, detectives spoke with Schlemm's mother with whom he resides and obtained a consent to search on the residence. During the search, proceeds from burglaries were located in Schlemm's bedroom.

Schlemm was taken to the Criminal Investigations Division where he told investigators he was responsible for residentinal and car burglaries in the Libertyville area. Taken during the burglaries were several items including; approximately $200 USC, an iPhone, an iPod, several purses and a wallet. Schlemm told investigators he took the items in order to support his Heroin addiction. The iPhone, a purse, a wallet and a set of car keys were recovered and will soon be returned to their owners.

"I cannot stress enough how drug addictions drive people to commit other crimes," said Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran. "We face a battle with drug dealers each and everyday along with working to solve crimes that are committed by drug users."

Schlemm was charged with three counts of Residential Burglary, three counts of Burglary, one count of Theft, one count of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance and one count of Unlawful Possession of Hyperdermic Needles.

Schlemm appeared in front of the Honorable Judge Raymond Collins this morning where his bond was set at $500,000. If convicted, Schlemm could face up to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He remains in the Lake County Jail.

SHOCKER: LBC Football Official Accused of Ripping Off Almost $70k!

Stories like this are always disturbing - especially when they happen to people you know. The Daily Herald's Mick Zawislak is reporting that Libertyville CPA and Libertyville Boys Club volunteer, Christopher Jacobson is accused to pocketing $67,000 while serving as the LBC treasurer. According to the Daily Herald story, the club only has an annual budget of about $100,000. LBC chairman Rich Danilkowicz told the Daily Herald that he didn't expect the theft to affect day-to-day operations. LBC football has been around for 77 years.

Given the fact that the alleged theft represents almost 67% of the club's annual budget - I'm sure if you'd like to make a financial contribution to the group, your gift would be very much appreciated.

Here is the link to the Daily Herald story: www.dailyherald.com

Libertyville Home Values on the Rise!

Good news for those looking to sell a home in Libertyville - according to Amy Alderman's story in the Libertyville TribLocal - home sales in town have increased by 12 percent! Home sales in Libertyville have far exceeded surrounding areas - Countywide, home sales have only increased 3.9 percent.

Story: http://triblocal.com/libertyville/2011/01/03/home-sales-increased-by-12-percent-in-2010

Mayor Terry Weppler is quoted in the story as saying: “Talk to anyone about why they moved to Libertyville and they would say it would be because of the schools and downtown,”

I couldn't agree more with the mayor! This is a good reason why it's important to support MainStreet Libertyville! Are you a member? Visit the MainStreet website, or just e-mail me (jimmoran77 (at) gmail.com) if you want more information on becoming a member and/or MainStreet volunteer.
